The second positions, beside the vāhenga are known as tāʻofi vāhenga and are for the next ranking persons. The two last positions, that is at the very ends of the frontrow, the fakapotu, are also reserved for high-ranking persons. The other vāhenga is then dressed the same as the other performers. The one who is perceived as really the most important, either the male or female vāhenga usually is also wearing a uniform different from the rest. These are the persons with the highest rank of the group, often a prince or princess. The persons in the middle of the front row, on the division line between the two gender are known as the vāhenga (central performer). Performers The lakalaka from Kanokupolu for the 70th birthday of the king of Tonga. Everybody gets excited, both the performers and the public. First calmly and subdued, but toward the end becoming wilder and wilder, while the tempo of the beat goes up as well. The dance normally starts with the singing of the first stanza by both dancers and chorus, which is a deference to the god, the king and the chiefs of the country. At the next stanza they move back to their original positions. During the sipa the men move to the left, the women to the right, the two groups passing through each other, until their order is reversed. Sometimes in the middle of some lakalaka there are stanzas with a different type of lyrics and music than the rest, called the sipa. Behind them the chorus the lakalaka is a sung dance, there is none or very little instrumental accompaniment. The men to the right, the women to the left as seen from the public. The dancers are standing in one or more rows, depending on the number of participants. In any case, how different their haka on first glance may be, both men and women interpret the words of the songs, but in a symbolic, allusive way as so typical for Tongan dance. In addition to small steps, they may at times turn around, sit down or even lie down. The movements of the men are wilder and more vigorous. Nevertheless, the arm movements are farther away from the body ( laufola, outstretched arms) than for example with the māʻuluʻulu. Most of the time the women make small steps to the left and right only, and their arm movements are small and fluid. The dance movements of men and women are different. Among them several made by Queen Sālote, like Takafalu, Nailasikau, Sāngone, ʻOtu langi, Tuaikaepau, and so forth. Nevertheless, there are lakalaka which have become so famous that they can generally be used at any occasion. Often when a celebration is coming up, a punake (poet) will write the lyrics to the occasion, assign music to the stanzas from a pool of typical tunes and then choreograph the haka (dance movements). The lakalaka is a living dance in the sense that new compositions are still daily made. Thus, a new dance was born, but still retained many of its original characteristics, and was approved by the missionaries. People agreed, and they came with their own suggestions, which were quite the same as those of the not-yet-forgotten meʻelaufola. Tuku used missionary-approved nursery rhymes and added some simple gestures and steps. Considering that the dance had never stopped being practiced, it would probably be better to say that he revitalised it. The lakalaka as it is known nowadays is usually accredited to have been invented towards the end of the 19th century by a high chief, who was a Methodist preacher as well: Tukuʻaho (1858-1897), from Tatakamotonga. Admittedly, the pre-missionary pōmeʻe (night dances), after which couples disappeared into the bushes, did not occur anymore. There are reports of some huge dance festivals during these times, and no reports of any arrests. In any case, none of these laws specified exactly what was meant by 'heathen dance'. Notably, an article to that effect was absent from the 1862 code, although it was reinserted by 1885. This was confirmed in the 1850 code of King Tāufaʻāhau Tupou I. The current lakalaka seems to be quite equal to the ancient meʻelaufola (outstretched arms dance), of which descriptions exist from early European explorers, but the dance was forbidden by the missionaries for being too 'heathen'. It is the ideal dance at formal occasions, like the birthday of the king or the opening of a church. It is considered as the national dance of Tonga and part of the intangible human heritage. The lakalaka (walking briskly) is a Tongan group dance where the performers are largely standing still and make gestures with their arms only. 12/30/2023 0 Comments Leviathan europa universalis 4The gameplay requires the player to lead a nation by finding a balance of military, diplomacy, and economy. At the beginning of the game many provinces are considered "uncolonised" and are meant to represent possible land colonisable by other nations. Each of these provinces contribute to their country either positively or negatively, as provinces can both provide resources to a nation and serve as a point of unrest and rebellion. The game itself is an interactive map of the Earth divided into the provinces that compose nations. The game has been formed to begin historically, with events occurring when they did in history. It is a strategy game where players can control a nation from the Late Middle Ages through the early modern period (1444–1821), conducting trade, administration, diplomacy, colonization, and warfare. If you're wondering what all that looked like, well, here's a demonstration.Europa Universalis IV is a 2013 grand strategy video game in the Europa Universalis series, developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive as a sequel to Europa Universalis III (2007). Players reported that games crashed after 100 in-game years, settled provinces reverted back to being unsettled, and Horde Government-Religious policy would set missionary strength to 100 percent instead of one percent. It's just as well Paradox has committed to focusing on getting these bug fixes out, as Leviathan sure did have a lot of them at launch. Our goal is for you to be able to enjoy it now, and for the foreseeable future." "We apologise if you haven't been able to enjoy 1.31 and Leviathan the way we had hoped for, but we hope you'll give it another look with these fixes in place. "1.31.1 is now available through Steam it should be compatible with 1.30.0 saves (but we cannot guarantee this), and we have already begun work on 1.31.2 which will provide more updates in the near future. We have identified and corrected some issues in our production process based on learnings from this release and are taking concrete action - both to fix the existing issues and to ensure future releases meet the quality you expect. We've been hard at work getting the 1.31.1 hotfix out to you as soon as possible, and we feel confident that it will solve many of the most glaring issues that we have collected and identified. "We know that Leviathan and 1.31 Majapahit did not live up to the expectations you and we had set for this release. Hotfix 1.31.1 was also rolled out at the end of April to tackle some of the issues introduced with Leviathan.Įurogamer contacted Paradox last month for comment on the release, and was told the following: One patch is planned to release this week, with another due by the end of May or early June. He felt that there should have been a break in the development of EU4 after the release of the Emperor expansion, "until we had a team ready to start designing and working early in 2021".Īs a result of the negative feedback from the release, Paradox Tinto is now accelerating its plans to fix all legacy bugs for EU4, and wants to ensure these fixes are rolled out frequently. "This is entirely my fault."Īndersson explained he should have delayed the release of Leviathan until the team had the resources that were needed, along with giving them "time to properly onboard on the project". "As the studio manager and game director, at the end of the day, this is my responsibility, so I have to apologise for this," Andersson added. Over on the Paradox Forums, Andersson admitted "Leviathan was one of the worst releases we have had," and that the expansion "follows a long trail of low quality releases starting back with Golden Century for EU4. Europa Universalis 4: Leviathan - Release Trailer Paradox Tinto studio manager and game director Johan Andersson has now issued an apology for the state of the expansion and several previous releases for EU4. Players said the DLC was seriously buggy and suffered from a host of problems, and sure enough, the game's bug report megathreads quickly filled up with complaints. The recent Leviathan expansion for Europa Universalis 4 has managed to earn itself an unflattering spot amongst the lowest-ranked products on Steam, with a positive review rating of only seven percent from 3955 reviews. 12/29/2023 0 Comments Primrose highland meadowsThe par-3s were my favorite, especially the par-3 8th. The course layout took full advantage of the many majestic views of the the surrounding Blue Ridge mountains. The tee box grass is cut so low and tightly I had to double check that I wasn't still on the green from the last hole, they're that good! Everything from tee to green and all around was absolutely immaculate. The conditions of the course were superior to any public course I've played in Virginia. Having played another course the day before that has been ranked in the top 10 most difficult in the nation I can tell you this one was even more challenging! It helps if you play the right tees though, I didn't and definitely paid the the price for it. The course itself will challenge even the best golfers. The course, clubhouse, and the rest of the property was wrapped in an auburn glow that made the whole place shine. Some of them were truly breathtaking and going in the autumn with the fall foliage made it all the better. The views were even better than I expected. It's not a course that's easily in my budget but I knew it would be worth the cost to play on such a lovely property. From the jaw-dropping views to the incredible conditions and fantastic staff, this was a special experience that I will always remember.Īs a fan of mountain-stye golf, I have been looking forward to playing the Highland Course for several years now. Unpublished report submitted to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Just prior to our meeting, some of the team were out in the Conecuh and discovered a baby indigo snake, the first wild-born one seen in Alabama in over 60 years! This fantastic news has been covered in a number of media outlets over the last couple of weeks and is a sign that all the effort put into the reintroductions is paying off. southern hognose snake (Heterodon simus Linneaus) in Alabama. These releases have been going on for about a decade now, with over 150 indigo snakes released. Then they are released into a section of the Conecuh National Forest in southern Alabama. It is a gentle giant and an apex predator. The indigo’ s diet of animals is varied, but it prefers dining on other snakes. Its ir idescent blue-black scales glisten in the sunlight a coral hue tints its chin, throat, and cheeks. Its coastal waters teem with marine mammals, fish and whales. The prairie areas are home to rabbits, snakes and armadillos. It has many of the common North American forest animals, including white-tail deer, opossums, shrews, rodents and foxes. We’ve done this by rearing young snakes here at the Zoo that were hatched at the Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation until they are large enough to avoid most predators. The docile and nonvenomous eastern indigo snake is the largest snake in North America, growing up to 9 feet long. Alabama has a wonderful diversity of animals. Forest Service, Alabama Department of Conservation of Natural Resources, Central Florida Zoo’s Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation, and others, Zoo Atlanta has helped to reintroduce indigo snakes to a part of their former range in Alabama. The population of this highly venomous snake is rapidly declining in Alabama, perhaps due to the invasion of fire ants preying on its eggs and young snakes. Working with a number of partners including Auburn University, the U.S. This species was last known to be surviving and reproducing there in 1954, after which populations disappeared. We discussed many ideas, made plans, and had really great discussions at this meeting, all centered on the future of this iconic reptile. Last week I attended a meeting of the Eastern Indigo Snake Reintroduction Committee, which is a partnership of multiple state, federal, zoo, and non-governmental organizations to study the indigo snake as well as help it return to areas where it once flourished. They are also suffering heavy declines across their range and are under the protection of the Endangered Species Act. Although not blue as the moniker “indigo” might suggest, these sleek black snakes are highly iridescent and in the right light, have blue or purple sheen to them. This one looks like he had a little run-in with. When it dies, the yellow fades more quickly, so the snake looks blue. The snake's green color is made up of blue and yellow pigments in its skin. They are active predators that can cover large amounts of ground in their pursuit of prey, mates, and shelter (typically gopher tortoise burrows). The Smooth Green Snake (Opheodrys Liochlorophis vernalis) does the same thing, but they're a more northerly or westerly snake and are not in Alabama. They are also considered apex predators in the southern longleaf pine and sandhill environments of the southeastern US. The species is very popular in the pet trade. The eastern indigo snake ( Drymarchon couperi) is the largest non-venomous snake in the United States, with large adult males reaching lengths over seven feet. It happens to be the longest native snake species in the United States. The carnivorous species derives its name from its iridescent underside. Indigo snake is a species of nonvenomous snake belonging to the colubrid family, found only in the eastern United States. Doki Doki Literature Club! These performances were meant to counter “verticality”-a concept he uses to underscore the wealth and health it requires to be socially mobile. The hallmark of Pope.L’s practice is his use of iteration and intervention, both of which are evident in his Crawl series, which saw him move on hands and knees across large swaths of New York City on several occasions between 19. His work is as distinctive as it is expansive. Known for his provocative and often absurdist works that deal with race, economic systems and language, the Chicago-based artist and educator works across multiple disciplines, from installations and film to painting and writing. Pope.L may not call himself one of the most influential performance artists working in the US today, but he has been known to pass out business cards declaring he is “the friendliest Black artist in America”. She stabs at the air in the imaginary space of ideology and patriarchy that binds woman to unpaid labor. Staged in a mundane kitchen with the apparatuses of cooking displayed in front of her, Rosler picks up each instrument in order to demonstrate their use but does so in a transgressive and dubious manner that throws up the entire lexicon of woman’s work into disarray suffused with anger and aggression. The cooking video spoof was a parody of the Julia Childs’ cooking show airing at that time. WN: Sure. Semiotics of the Kitchen is the perfect Wet Conceptual work. Could you briefly break down its “Wet” characteristics for me. Significantly, the importance of immaterial objects was superseded by immaterial labor which was performative. GR: I really liked Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen. Piper along with Yoko Ono, Mary Kelly, Martha Rosler, and Judy Chicago had to await the crisis in social, political, and cultural conditions that the rise of the information and knowledge economy provoked for their exploits to be appreciated as part of the conceptual genre. In the dozen paintings on view, Ferris uses spray guns, oil sticks and brushes, palette knives for building up and scraping away, as well as his body in paintings that explore what possibilities the medium may yet yield.Īdrian Piper’s Catalysis III, in which the artist walked around New York City wearing a shirt emblazoned with the words ‘wet paint’ helped push artist Warren Neidich to moisten the age-old term Conceptualism. If “sWISHes” is a painting of anything it may be this: a dogged belief that painting at this late stage still has a future. The resulting painting strikes a delicate harmonious cohesion, cleverly creating a sense of depth and motion, with no real-world referent, except maybe pixels and graffiti. His nods to digital culture and use of the grid suggest an affinity with Albert Oehlen and, more so, Laura Owens, as in “sWISHes” (2023), a loose tangle of squiggles - a not-quite calligraphy of yellow and aqua spray paint - that dances atop a field of squares in a variety of contrasting colors predominated by blue on pink. His willingness to explore the possibilities of a particular tool through painting mirrors Jasper Johns. The ecstasy that the Brooklyn-based painter Keltie Ferris finds in color recalls Matisse. Today, many kids enjoy building their own miniature log cabins with toys called Lincoln Logs. When English settlers began to come to America, they often built more traditional houses and converted existing log cabins to outbuildings to be used as animal shelters or sheds. Since most log cabins were not meant as permanent dwellings, not many old log cabins still exist. Over time, a family could build a new log cabin from the ground up in just a few days. These were often pine and spruce trees, which were readily available in large numbers in the forests that covered the unsettled frontier.Īs people began to grow in their experience with building log cabins, they developed better tools to help in construction. Log cabin builders would look for the tallest, straightest trees they could find. Fortunately, the insulating properties of wood tended to make log cabins cozier than wooden huts covered with animal skins. To make their log cabins warmer and resistant to bad weather, settlers would fill the cracks between logs with mud or moss (called daubing) or sticks and rocks (called chinking). For example, they eventually created interlocking corners by cutting notches in the ends of the logs. Over time, their building processes got more sophisticated. When these peoples began to settle the Americas, they brought their traditions of building log cabins with them.Įarly settlers probably made their first log cabins by simply stacking tree trunks one on top of another and overlapping the trunks at the corners. Historians believe log cabins may have gotten their start in Northern Europe and Scandinavia. Today, modern log homes are built with hand-worked - called hewn - logs that fit together more securely than simple round logs. Most pioneer log cabins were made with basic round logs. They were often built as temporary shelters when first arriving in an area. Unlike modern log homes, most pioneer log cabins were simple one-story structures that often consisted of only one room. Have you ever WONDERed how the old pioneers went about building their log cabin homes? In fact, many people prefer them because of their rustic charm and natural beauty.īut back in the day, they could be a chore to build. Of course, most log cabins today can be built with all the conveniences of any modern home. If you've ever been to the mountains, you may have stayed in a log cabin. And houses? They were often homemade cabins made with rough logs. Running water was available…if you had a running stream or river nearby! Cooking took place over an open fire. Pioneers didn't have all the modern comforts that we have today. Would you have liked to have lived back in the pioneer days? Sure, it would have been neat to have been friends with Abraham Lincoln. |
